  • Good…

    Better!!!

Okay here’s to the poetry I’ll be reading @ the Poet’s Loft at 8pm on Wednesday -

    ******************************
Today I went to the Mountain’s Summit,
Just to see endless hills and ridgetops
and the water spills that till those hills,
And this is what I gathered from it.
I saw civilization and blotted it from mind.
Cleared the land of all mankind.
Pondered the distance that this existance
Would perservere – Not long I fear!
A perfection seen through failing eyes
Fades away and then slowly dies.
A funeral – white shirts, black ties
Pallbearers made from Greed and Lies.
And this is where its story ends.
    Severed Dirt incapable to mend
    The Mighty Oak submits
    and then does bend.
    (No…
    …it breaks)
    All falls away
    Just as it began
And THIS will be the plight of MAN !
    ******************************

    This Is A Poem

    About crying for people
    you’ve never met,
    because sometimes when
    you look at someone,
    their eyes are vacant,
    and their bodies are almost
    invisible.  That is how ordinary
    they are.

    For example,
the older guy at Jiffy Lube,
    the one who always scowls
at me while he looks up my
    information on his computer,
    mispronounces my name, tries
to talk me into some super oil
    I don’t want.  I’m sorry mister,
that you’re hands are always greasy
and you hate your life.  Just because
I don’t like to pull my car over that gaping
service hole in the floor does not give
you the right to glass up your eyes and motion
with your fingers, the international sign
for roll it forward sometime today lady.

And what about the woman who plucks chickens
all day long?  The boy in the keyhole?
The drowsy shopkeeper?  The barstool warmers?
Ditch diggers?  Prison guards?  The wicked witch of the West?
Alice in Wonderland?  What about her?

What have they been that they might never be
    again?

An abstract branch, too thin for children
to swing from, too high for them to reach?
A spotted leaf, dangling by their feet,
sleeping peacefully until the wind wakes them?

I have been writing their obituaries.
A bunch of statistics about chance and fate,
    failure and successful suicides.

I get my practice by witnessing lesser deaths.
This is a poem about a plea.
That of a beetle trapped in the web
    of a black widow.
See how he struggles to no avail.
    And she just sits there
    with her red belly glaring
as if she’s got all the time
    in the world.

    This chaotic scene
    isn’t noticeable to everyone.
    Just to those who’s eyes
draw thin, hypnotic lines through the air.

Nobody will pay attention, of course,
as she makes her slow way over,
    as she punctures his shell
and sucks out his liquid contents.
He’ll die and not one of us will lift a finger
    to save him.

This is a poem for the beetle.

    **************************************
    To me,
    Take all the minutes
    of an eternity
and their worth would never compare
to one single moment with you
    standing next to me.
    It would take
    – the moon to crack
    – the sky to part
    – the heaven’s diamonds fall, all the stars,
    for you to ever realize
the love contained in this fragile box
    (The love
    for you
    inside of this heart.)
    Just as that
    brilliant
    – yet,
    backwards speaking
    poet once wrote:
    “…and its you
    are whatever a moon
    has always meant
    and whatever a sun
    will always sing
    is you…”
    Why, it’s true.
    It IS you!
Ask me the ways that I love you
    and my answer
    would be simply:
    “Baby…
…I haven’t yet learned to count that far.”
    I know it’s cliche
    – a poem about love
    But what can I say?
A poem is not meant to be read.
It is meant to be felt
    – and I feel you.
    Deep inside my soul
    Amoungst these cold, dying ashes
    You are red hot
    – a fiery coal,
    dancing in those unforgiving flames.
My pride is a small ember
that I just keep swallowing for you
    – But I picked you
    And despite everything
That I have ever been taught or told
    about this fiery cinder
    – It is you…
…that I just want to hold.
    *****************************
    Females,
They come in all shapes and sizes.
    All forms and all names.
They don’t know what they want.
    Plain and simple.
Like my boxers, which are striped with plaid stars.
    Plain and fucking simple.
Most have seemingly idolled the figures of
Mabaline and Covergirl practically all of their lives
    – brainwashed by that sick distant relative of “The Man”.
    …they paint their faces on
with all the pretty colors that hide their true beauty…

Because above hips, chest, thighs, or butt,
the most real ass shit is the ladies who don’t give a fuck.
I can’t believe us men still allow it,
they and we still-let-toes become mangled and bunched,
    crippled and crunched in Stilletos.

Do you realize what Stilleto means?!?
    KNIFE!!!
We have our women walking on knives for us “Men”!
And you wonder why at old age
they become so crippled they can’t harldly move.
It’s all that pain and strife they go through.
They’re living in a world of male expectations
    …they’re clawing
    …and crawling
    …and kicking and screaming
    …and biting
    …tooth to brick
…to gain some form of liberation from these male expectations
    – They’re the reason why 14 year old girls’ wrists are slit,
the reason why 10 year old girls think that skinny is a compliment.

They settle with style and class, deserting individuality in the process.

You women need to realize that…

Maybe its just the Mabaline that most men are looking for but,
CoverGirl, cover for yourself because you are poetry in the making,
    just a flower in bloom,
    baby,
    and You’re Worth It.
No, your value isn’t judged by the Bens you spend
    on eye-shadow and lip gloss.
No, you’re worth more than just that.
Realize ladies that you are beautiful in your own
and you don’t need our second opinions to feel good about that.
    Ladies, realize this
    …because you are.
    **************
    Two tears fall from
    blued eyes simultaneously.
    I look to God
but do you still see me?
Maybe a cloud has blocked your view,
but lately I’ve become quite blue.
Oh God! Oh God!  Where are you?
Lately morals have become shriveled and dry,
    Left on sunbaked patios
    Left to die.
So for this world:  I cry!  I cry!
Where have all the ideals gone?
    Poisoning us all–
    The “Self-Love Drug” passes on.

    Liberty Needs Glasses

excuse me but Lady Liberty needs glasses
And so does Mrs. Justice by her side
Both the broads R blind as bats
    Stumbling thru the system
    Justice bumped into Mutulu and
    Trippin’ on Geronimo Pratt
    But stepped right over Oliver
    And his crooked partner Ronnie
Justice stubbed her Big Toe on Mandela
And liberty was misquoted by the Indians
    slavery was a learning phase
    Forgotten without a verdict
while Justice is on a rampage
    4 endangered surviving Black males
I mean really if anyone really valued life
    and cared about the masses
They’d take ‘em both 2 Pen Optical
and get 2 pairs of glasses

~Tupac Amaru Shakur (The Rose That Grew From Concrete)

    *****************************************************
    When the world becomes
    too much to bear
    and I close these windows
    To escape from reality,
    You become my eyelids.
    Every single time,
    eyes closed,
    I breathe
    …breathe you into me,
    the silence in serenity
    in the darkness,
    it is you I see.
    Like still photo slides
    I blink and see
    a new face of you,
just as beautiful as the last.
    You haunt me.
But I don’t see you anymore.
    You’ve disappeared from this place.
Gone to somewhere that I can’t reach.
    …Somewhere I can’t see.
    And I keep telling myself
    to stop dreaming of you
    and start dreaming for me.

    nobody loses all the time

    nobody loses all the time

    i had an uncle named
Sol who was a born failure and
nearly everybody said he should have gone
into vaudeville perhaps because my Uncle Sol could
sing McCann He Was A Diver on Xmas Eve like Hell Itself which
may or may not account for the fact that my Uncle

Sol indulged in that possibly most inexcusable
of all to use a highfalootin phrase
    luxuries that is or to
    wit farming and be
    it needlessly
    added

    my Uncle Sol’s farm
    failed because the chickens
    ate the vegetables so
    my Uncle Sol had a
    chicken farm till the
    skunks ate the chickens when

    my Uncle Sol
    had a skunk farm but
    the skunks caught cold and
    died so
    my Uncle Sol imitated the
    skunks in a subtle manner

or by drowning himself in the watertank
but somebody who’d given my Unde Sol a Victor
Victrola and records while he lived presented to
him upon the auspicious occasion of his decease a
scrumptious not to mention splendiferous funeral with
tall boys in black gloves and flowers and everything and

i remember we all cried like the Missouri
when my Uncle Sol’s coffin lurched because
    somebody pressed a button
    (and down went
    my Uncle
    Sol

    and started a worm farm)

    So farewell,
    this is it.
    I mean it this time.
    Thats all she wrote,
    one word –
    – goodbye.

    So farewell,
    it’s over.
    A lost cause
    I guess –
    – My life
    I confess.

    Winter will pass again–
    – once more.
    Distant clouds float
    on a distant shore.
I am the last leaf fallen
    before snow.
    But now I ask God
    before I let go:
    Love,
    don’t brush my branches
    anymore.

    I’m sorry.
    I’m sorry.
I’ll say it a thousand times more.

    Love,
    don’t brush my branches
    anymore.

    I’m so tired
    of being
    the last leaf
    on this
    forsaken tree.
    ***********
    When we hold hands,
    Time stops
    clocks drop
And in an instant I realize
    Einstein’s Theory of Relativity.
    He said:
    “When you put your hand
    on a hot stove,
it feels like an just an instant.
But when you sit next to
    the love of your life,
    it feels like an eternity.”
    And I just find myself
    thinking –
    – Man, this guy is a GENIUS!
    Of course, no simple equation
    compares to the
    biological,
    chemical,
    physical,
    and psychological
    mechanics behind love.
But when you hold my hand,
    the Earth stops spinning
    in a moment of eternity,
    and the whole world
    Stops
    When you hold my hand.
    *******************
    You are
    My dark lion
    Resting in a warm cradle
    Of flesh
    extended from shoulder to index
    My ominous stalker
    You follow behind
    When the sun
    Glares off
    of the windows
    to my soul.
    You are
    the mute child
    that plays his part silently
    yet listens
    to my every
    word.
    You are
    warm pocket lint
    in my worn denim.
    We are one.
    You.
    Me.
    We.
    ****
    The follow through
    of what you said
    went something like
me driving off in my car
    pondering how blind
    I could have been
    to not see it coming.

    That word
    It hit me
    like a Mac truck
    against my cranium.
    The car was totaled.
    That word.

    Goodbye.

I was cut out of the wreckage
    Only to find
    a crippling sense of paralysis
    below my neck.
    My head was spinning.
    Unlike the rest
    Of my body
    from this feeling.

    Then my name was called.
    Waking up
    a lapse into reality.
Then I looked over at her.
    And realized everything.
    It was just a dream.

    Or a nightmare.
    ************

    I tried to tell her:
This way the twig is bent.
Born of my trunk and strengthened by my roots,
              you must stretch newgrown branches
              closer to the sun
              than I can reach.

    I wanted to say:
Extend my self to that far atmosphere
              only my dreams allow.

    But the twig broke,
    and yesterday I saw her
    walking down an unfamiliar street,
              feet confident
face slanted upward toward a threatening sky,
    and
              she was smiling
              and she was
              her very free,
              her very individual
              unpliable
              own.
    ********************
I am silver and exact, I have no preconceptions.
Whatever I see I swallow immediately
Just as it is, unmisted by love or dislike.
I am not cruel, only truthful –
The eye of a little god, four-cornered.
Most of the time I meditate on the opposite wall.
It is pink, with speckles.  I have looked at it so long
I think it is a part of my heart.  But it flickers.
Faces and darkness separate us over and over.

Now I am a lake.  A woman bends over me,
Searching my reaches for what she really is.
Then she turns to those liars, the candles or the moon.
I see her back, and reflect it faithfully.
She rewards me with tears and an agitation of hands.
I am important to her.  She comes and goes.
Each morning it is her face that replaces the darkness.
In me she has drowned a young girl, and in me an old woman
Rises toward her day after day, like a terrible fish.
But I don’t judge, for I am merely a reflection too.

Well thats it kiddos…have a great day and tell me which three I should read up there.  Leave me comments baby!

  • Poetry is:

A loud expression for, but not always limited to, the benefit of the writer, spoken through a quiet voice, and reflected in silence.

I must say that EVERYONE should listen to the song “Calgone” by Incubus (its at the bottom of the list on my music player) all the way through.  Its starts getting REALLY funny towards the end.  Its like 13 minutes long though, but trust me, they were like REALLY high when they made this.  Hilarious!

  • HONORABLE MANHOOD

A week before Manassas, Major Sullivan Ballou of the 2nd Rhode Island wrote home to his wife in Smithfield:

    July 14, 1861
    Camp Clark, Washington

    My very dear Sarah:

The indications are very strong that we shall move in a few days – perhaps tomorrow.  Lest (unless) I should not be able to write again, I feel impelled to write a few lines that may fall under your eye when I shall be no more….
I have no misgivings about, or lack of confidence in the cause in which I am engaged, and my courage does not halt or falter.  I know how strongly American Civilization now leans on the triumph of the Government, and how great a debt we owe to those who went before us through the blood and sufferings of the Revolution.  And I am willing – perfectly willing – to lay down all my joys in this life, to help maintain this Government, and to pay that debt….
Sarah my love for you is deathless, it seems to bind me with mighty cables that nothing but Omnipotence could break; and yet my love of Country cames over me like a strong wind and bears me unresistibly on with all these chains to the battle field.
The memories of the blissful moments I have spent with you come creeping over me, and I feel most gratified to God and to you that I have enjoyed them so long.  And hard it is for me to give them up and burn to ashes the hopes of future years, when, God willing, we might still have lived and loved together, and seen our sons grown up to honorable manhood, around us.  I have, I know, but few and small claims upon Divine Providence, but something whispers to me – perhaps it is the wafter prayer of my little Edgar, that I shall return to my loved ones unharmed.  If I do not my dear Sarah, never forget how much I love you, and when my last breath escapes me on the battle field, it will whisper your name.  Forgive my many faults, and the many pains I have caused you.  How thoughtless and foolish I have often times been!  How gladly would I wash out with my tears every little spot upon your happiness….
But, O Sarah! if the dead can come back to this earth and flit (fly) unseen around those they loved, I shall always be near you; in the gladdest days and in the darkest nights … always, always, and if there be a soft breeze upon your cheek, it shall be my breath, as the cool air fans your throbbing temple, it shall be my spirit passing by.  Sarah do not mourn me dead; think I am gone and wait for thee, for we shall meet again….

Major Sullivan Ballou of the 2nd Rhode Island died in the Battle of Manassas, the first battle of the Civil War.

    Jenny Kissed Me

Jenny kiss’d me when we met,
         jumping from the chair she sat in;
Time, you thief, who love to get
sweets into your list, put that in!
Say I’m weary, say I’m sad,
say that health and wealth have miss’d me,
Say I’m growing old, but add,
         Jenny kiss’d me.

    ~James Leigh Hunt

That poem was read at The Poet’s Loft on Wednesday night when I read my poetry.  I just thought it was a nifty piece of work.

Well, last night was great.  It was very entertaining and I enjoyed it very much.  I especially enjoyed John French, a guitarist and singer.  However, what seemed to take the show was Cordell and Austin, a guitar and bass duo, that was just pure liquid orgasm.  Man that boy can play some guitar.  Too bad he’s got a bass player, because that’s the kind of music I play, jazz and Incubus.  Tomorrow is the usual and predictable football game against Hope.  The band will be electronica to the fullest and as usual, with any other football team, will kick our football team’s asses all over the field.  I’m betting on a score of 32 to zip.  Hope being the better score of course.  Of course I have faith in our football team…faith in their losing streak.  We’re going for a perfect season again this year, just like last year:  0 – 10.  Anyways, I’m meeting up with a cool guy tomorrow night after the game and do some stuff that only cool people don’t do.  Did you catch that?  No?  Good!

I’ve decided to enter the 2006 “Arkansas Grand Slam” with my poetry on October 7th-8th, 2006.  The grand prize is $1000 cash.  I think I could win…maybe.  I’ll be trying to get together the very best of my poetry and narrowing it down to one…which is VERY hard.  I’m out guys, later!

  • So, I’ve been thinking.  I went to Youth Group tonight and we went to the different parts of the sanctuary, writing down what God was trying to say to us at each location.  I was at the Alter and had a realization.

I’ve done some things that I CANNOT take back, as much as I want them to just dissolve away.  For a time, I couldn’t even think about them, and even after I could, I certainly couldn’t tell anyone, and for a LONG time I felt I couldn’t even admit them to God himself.  This was due to the fact that I felt that he wasn’t even there for me when I needed him.  He was never there when I asked him to take the grief and pain and weariness away, and lift my depressed heart.  I felt he didn’t answer my prayers, so it was just a lost cause.

Then I realized, I have been given SO MANY CHANCES at life.

*Walking through an alley that two days before 2 girls had been brutally raped and murdered in
    *Surviving my car crash
*Never becoming so lost while hunting that I would never be found
*Given a second chance after loosing my parents credit card
*Not being crippled when I was young because of my weak knees
*My drug test coming out NEGATIVE instead of what it should have been.

I have made so many wrong choices, and yet I am blessed with a second chance.  And so, I thank God for everything that he has done for me, because God knows I don’t deserve a bit of his Grace.  How could I be so selfish to not share my thoughts with Him?  He shared His Son with me.  He gave His Son so that I could have that second chance.

So here I am, God.  Standing here, ALIVE, because of you.

    And by the way, Thankyou!

    -Caleb

I just HAD to put her poem on my site.  Its amazing and SOOOO much better than what I could write.

    This Is A Poem

I get my practice by witnessing lesser deaths.
This is a poem about a plea.
That of a beetle trapped in the web
    of a black widow.
See how he struggles to no avail.
    And she just sits there
    with her red belly glaring
as if she’s got all the time
    in the world.

    This chaotic scene
    isn’t noticeable to everyone.
    Just to those who’s eyes
draw thin, hypnotic lines through the air.

Nobody will pay attention, of course,
as she makes her slow way over,
    as she punctures his shell
and sucks out his liquid contents.
He’ll die and not one of us will lift a finger
    to save him.

This is a poem for the beetle.

  • I’m going to Youth Group on Wednesday, play my bass, then go to the Poet’s Loft and read.  Might meet up with Alex….and possibly April (?).  I dunno, but these are the poems I’ll probably read…in this order:

    To me,
    Take all the minutes
    of an eternity
and their worth would never compare
to one single moment with you
    standing next to me.
    It would take
    – the moon to crack
    – the sky to part
    – the heaven’s diamonds fall, all the stars,
    for you to ever realize
the love contained in this fragile box
    (The love
    for you
    inside of this heart.)
    Just as that
    brilliant
    – yet,
    backwards speaking
    poet once wrote:
    “…and its you
    are whatever a moon
    has always meant
    and whatever a sun
    will always sing
    is you…”
    Why, it’s true.
    It IS you!
Ask me the ways that I love you
    and my answer
    would be simply:
    “Baby…
…I haven’t yet learned to count that far.”
    I know it’s cliche
    – a poem about love
    But what can I say?
A poem is not meant to be read.
It is meant to be felt
    – and I feel you.
    Deep inside my soul
    Amoungst these cold, dying ashes
    You are red hot
    – a fiery coal,
    dancing in those unforgiving flames.
My pride is a small ember
that I just keep swallowing for you
    – But I picked you
    And despite everything
That I have ever been taught or told
    about this fiery cinder
    – It is you…
…that I just want to hold.

Where has all the democracy gone?
    Red, White, and Blue dies.
    Red, White, and Blue dyes
run from this once glorious Banner
Only to be replaced by the green hues
    of a silky Benjamin
    and a kilo of White.
    The axes of war,
wielded by a nation’s warriors in foreign lands
    now become the currency
    traded in for
    corruption on our streets,
    self-inflicted hatred
    for brothers
    sealed by the hot kiss
    of a Tec-9.
So where has all the democracy gone?
    To street corners,
    fishnets and eyeshadow.
The promise for a good time
    in exchange for
    the fruits of your labor–
    Those silky Benjamins.
    Where has democracy gone…
    …to shit.
    But nobody cares anymore,
so just don’t worry about it.

    Females,
They come in all shapes and sizes.

There you people go.  Well, I’m off to the “School of Ghetto-ology” (Hot Springs High School) so I guess I’ll update with more afterschool at around 4:30pm after marching practice.  Later.

  • I have discovered my newly found hate for girls who play me.  Let me just restate that when I said that (***** ********) MADE OUT WITH ME ON THE WAY HOME ON THE BAND BUS FROM LAKE HAMILTON…

…I was really telling the truth, but trying to hide the truth with false hopes of having someone who actually cared.  I know better now than to wear my heart on my sleeves.  Thanks for being that kind of girl (*****), willing to trade in every moral about the sacredness of a kiss, just to ride home after a quick thrill, a self-induced hallucination of your now EX-boyfriend, whose only reason for obtaining that status is probably because of your lack of monogomous qualities.  Then to try to blame that shit on me!!!  The one who was PURELY on the RECEIVING END of the spectrum of pleasure.  I once thought that the receiving end would be good, but now I realize that by RECEIVING END…they REALLY MEAN getting all the bullshit that you’ve thrown my way, RIGHT UP THE ASS!

Hell no I won’t “Just keep my lips shut!” because you can’t learn to keep YOUR LIPS COVERED!  I’m telling EVERYONE what REALLY happened.

(***** ********) made the move ON ME!

…ever feel that out of the of the trillions of positive and negative particles that the Great Creator made, the ones that had a unique attraction to one another, The Creator forgot to make an attraction for one….and so it wanders throughout the universe, bygon to bygon, endlessly without anything to attract to?

…that’s the loneliness I feel in my heart right now.

    Two tears fall from
    blued eyes simultaneously.
    I look to God
but do you still see me?
Maybe a cloud has blocked your view,
but lately I’ve become quite blue.
Oh God! Oh God!  Where are you?
Lately morals have become shriveled and dry,
    Left on sunbaked patios
    Left to die.
So for this world:  I cry!  I cry!
Where have all the ideals gone?
    Poisoning us all–
    The “Self-Love Drug” passes on.

Where has all the democracy gone?
    Red, White, and Blue dies.
    Red, White, and Blue dyes
run from this once glorious Banner
Only to be replaced by the green hues
    of a silky Benjamin
    and a kilo of White.
    The axes of war,

So where has all the democracy gone?

    Those silky Benjamins.

This is my tribute to the nice girls. To the nice girls who are overlooked, who become friends and nothing more, who spend hours fixating upon their looks and their personalities and their actions because it must be they that are doing something wrong. This is for the girls who don’t give it up on the first date, who don’t want to play mind games, who provide a comforting hug and a supportive audience for a story they’ve heard a thousand times. This is for the girls who understand that they aren’t perfect and that the guys they’re interested in aren’t either, for the girls who flirt and laugh and worry and obsess over the slightest glance, whisper, touch, because somehow they are able to keep alive that hope that maybe… maybe this time he’ll have understood. This is an homage to the girls who laugh loud and often, who are comfortable in skirts and sweats and combat boots, who care more than they should for guys who don’t deserve their attention. This is for those girls who have been in the trenches, who have watched other girls time and time again fake up and make up and fuck up the guys in their lives without saying a word. This is for the girls who have been there from the beginning and have heard the trite words of advice, from “there are plenty of fish in the sea,” to “time heals all wounds.” This is to honor those girls who know that guys are just as scared as they are, who know that they deserve better, who are seeking to find it.

This is for the girls who have never been in love, but know that it’s an experience that they don’t want to miss out on. For the girls who have sought a night with friends and been greeted by a night of catcalling, rude comments and explicit invitations that they’d rather not have experienced. This is for the girls who have spent their weekends sitting on the sidelines of a beer pong tournament or a case race, or playing Florence Nightingale for a vomiting guy friend or a comatose crush, who have received a drunk phone call just before dawn from someone who doesn’t care enough to invite them over but is still willing to pass out in their bed. This is for the girls who have left sad song lyrics in their away messages, who have tried to make someone understand through a subliminally appealing profile, who have time and time again dropped their male friend hint after hint after hint only to watch him chase after the first blonde girl in a skirt. This is for the girls who have been told that they’re too good or too smart or too pretty, who have been given compliments as a way of breaking off a relationship, who have ever been told they are only wanted as a friend.

This one’s for the girls who you can take home to mom, but won’t because it’s easier to sleep with a whore than foster a relationship; this is for the girls who have been led on by words and kisses and touches, all of which were either only true for the moment, or never real to begin with. This is for the girls who have allowed a guy into their head and heart and bed, only to discover that he’s just not ready, he’s just not over her, he’s just not looking to be tied down; this is for the girls who believe the excuses because it’s easier to believe that it’s not that they don’t want you, it’s that they don’t want anyone. This is for the girls who have had their hearts broken and their hopes dashed by someone too cavalier to have cared in the first place; this is for the nights spent dissecting every word and syllable and inflection in his speech, for the nights when you’ve returned home alone, for the nights when you’ve seen from across the room him leaning a little too close, or standing a little too near, or talking a little too softly for the girl he’s with to be a random hookup. This is for the girls who have endured party after party in his presence, finally having realized that it wasn’t that he didn’t want a relationship: it was that he didn’t want you. I honor you for the night his dog died or his grandmother died or his little brother crashed his car and you held him, thinking that if you only comforted him just right, or said the right words, or rubbed his back in the right way then perhaps he’d realize what it was that he already had. This is for the night you realized that it would never happen, and the sunrise you saw the next morning after failing to sleep.

This is for the “I really like you, so let’s still be friends” comment after you read more into a situation than he ever intended; this is for never realizing that when you choose friends, you seldom choose those which make you cry yourself to sleep. This is for the hugs you’ve received from your female friends, for the nights they’ve reassured you that you are beautiful and intelligent and amazing and loyal and truly worthy of a great guy; this is for the despair you all felt as you sat in the aftermath of your tears, knowing that that night the only companionship you’d have was with a pillow and your teddy bear. This is for the girls who have been used and abused, who have endured what he was giving because at least he was giving something; this is for the stupidity of the nights we’ve believed that something was better than nothing, though his something was nothing we’d have ever wanted. This is for the girls who have been satisified with too little and who have learned never to expect anything more: for the girls who don’t think that they deserve more, because they’ve been conditioned for so long to accept the scraps thrown to them by guys.

This is what I don’t understand. Men sit and question and whine that girls are only attracted to the mean guys, the guys who berate them and belittle them and don’t appreciate them and don’t want them; who use them for sex and think of little else than where their next conquest will be made. Men complain that they never meet nice girls, girls who are genuinely interested and compelling, who are intelligent and sweet and smart and beautiful; men despair that no good women want to share in their lives, that girls play mindgames, that girls love to keep them hanging. Yet, men, I ask you: where are you to meet one of these genuinely interested, thrillingly compelling, interesting and intelligent and sweet and beautiful and smart girls, were you to give her your number and wait for her to call… and if you were to receive a call from her the next day and she, in her truthful, loyal, intelligent and straightforward nice girl fashion, were to tell you that she finds you intriguing and attractive and interesting and worth her time and perhaps material from which she could fashion a boyfriend, would you or would you not immediately call your friends to tell them of the “stalker chick” you’d met the night prior, who called you and wore her heart on her sleeve and told the truth? And would you, or would you not, refuse to make plans with her, speak with her, see her again, and once again return to the bar or club or party scene and search once more for this “nice girl” who you just cannot seem to find? Because therein lies the truth, guys: we nice girls are everywhere. But you’re not looking for a nice girl. You’re not looking for someone genuinely interested in your intermural basketball game, or your anatomy midterm grade, or that argument you keep having with your father; you’re looking for a quick fix, a night when you can pretend to have a connection with another human being which is just as disposable as the condom you were using during it.

So don’t say you’re on the lookout for nice girls, guys, when you pass us up on every step you take. Sometimes we go undercover; sometimes we go in disguise: sometimes when that girl in the low cut shirt or the too tight miniskirt won’t answer your catcalls, sometimes you’re looking at a nice girl in whore’s clothing – - we might say we like the attention, we might blush and giggle and turn back to our friends, but we’re all thinking the same thing: “This isn’t me. Tomorrow morning, I’ll be wearing a teeshirt and flannel shorts, I’ll have slept alone and I’ll be making my hungover best friend breakfast. See through the disguise. See me.” You never do. Why? Because you only see the exterior, you only see the slutty girl who welcomes those advances. You don’t want the nice girl.. so don’t say you’re looking for a relationship: relationships take time and energy and intent, three things we’re willing to extend – - but in return, we’re looking for compassion and loyalty and trust, three things you never seem willing to express. Maybe nice guys finish last, but in the race they’re running they’re chasing after the whores and the sluts and the easy-targets… the nice girls are waiting at the finish line with water and towels and a congratulatory hug (and yes, if she’s a nice girl and she likes you, the sweatiness probably won’t matter), hoping against hope that maybe you’ll realize that they’re the ones that you want at the end of that silly race.

So maybe it won’t last forever. Maybe some of those guys in that race will turn in their running shoes and make their way to the concession stand where we’re waiting; however, until that happens, we still have each other, that silly race to watch, and all the chocolate we can eat (because what’s a concession stand at a race without some chocolate?)
